Lil Wayne and Drake premiered their latest collaboration and first single off the former’s Carter V album on Friday. After having Kobe Bryant and Floyd Mayweather kicking off the album campaign this week, Weezy decided to deliver his collaborative effort with Drizzy on the very awesome “Believe Me.” The track adds yet another win to the pair’s golden streak, which as we’ve known since So Far Gone —and their multiple mixtape offerings, as well as posse cuts and beyond— Wayne and Drake are untouchable whenever trading rhymes on the same track. What’s also untouchable is when these two link up with Boi-1da and Vinylz, who both happen to be the production masterminds behind “Believe Me.”

Both no stranger to working with the game’s elite, having collectively worked on hits for Jay Z and Rick Ross (“F*ckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt”), DJ Khaled (“No New Friends”) as well as multiple joints for Drizzy (“5AM In Toronto,” “The Language”), the two are responsible for crafting yet another buzzed-about banger, this time the first official single for arguably the biggest album of the year, Carter V.

“Vinylz had a beat and told me to check it out [so] I just added a few things to it and I pretty much sent it over to Drake when it was done then like, I don’t know what went on but suddenly, maybe like a month later, Drake and Wayne had the record,” Boi-1da tells REVOLT. “I think he must of brought the beat to Wayne and then they worked on the record together.”
Originally intended for Drake, after being crafted last year, the two producers had no idea that Wayne would not only hop on the beat, but make it the first single to his highly anticipated album. “We just knew the record happened, but we didn’t know the record would be the first single,” Vinylz also reveals.
Explaining the process behind their production works, Vinylz says whenever he and Boi-1da collaborate, the goal is always to outdo their previous works. “The way me and 1da work, we never make a beat specific for anyone. We just do us.”
“A lot of people complain about rappers these days sounding the same and using the same flows, but the producers are also responsible for that too because they’re making the same type of beats. So, it ends up making the rapper just wanna do the same sh-t. So every time we work, we just try something brand new,” the New York-native explained about his chemistry with Boi-1da.
Carrying a very minimalist sound compared to Wayne’s past works, “Believe Me” finds both Tunchi and Drizzy trading fiery lines. The song’s a testament to the streak the two artists garnered through the years, because of their dominant past collaborations. Agreeing on that note, Boi-1da believe’s the new single is yet another win. “It’s that Drake and Wayne combination. I feel like when both of them get on a record together, they don’t usually fail man. They’re like 10 for 10 with records they’ve done together and this is just another banger.”

To prove his point even further, the Toronto-bred superproducer also asserted, “this one is like a real, real, real record. It’s a crazy-in-the-streets and crazy-in-the-club kind of record. Drake goes off and Wayne goes off too, so [that’s] what happens whenever they come together.”
Meanwhile, Vinylz believes it’s Wayne and Drake’s versatility that also attributes to this golden streak.
“Another thing with both of them is that Drake and Wayne are both known for their versatility,” he says. “They can touch anything, any beat, any genre and they’ll attack it. So I think that’s why their fan base are from all over the place.”
“Believe Me” is the first official single off Wayne’s long-awaited Tha Carter V LP, which is said to (possibly) be his final album. When asked about the sound of C5, the beatsmiths remained as discreet as possible, only admitting that the album, to much fan delight, “is sounding crazy.”
